Your dryer runs a full cycle but clothes come out still damp — or it takes two cycles just to get one load dry. This is one of the most common appliance complaints we hear in The Woodlands, Kingwood, and Houston. The good news: most causes are fixable without replacing the machine.
1. Clogged Lint Trap or Exhaust Vent
A packed lint screen slashes airflow by up to 75%. Clean it before every load. But the bigger culprit is often the exhaust duct running from the back of the dryer to the outside — lint builds up in bends and can restrict airflow completely. Disconnect the duct and check for blockages. A professional duct cleaning once a year is worth every penny for a gas dryer.
2. Heating Element Has Failed (Electric Dryers)
If the drum spins but there’s no heat — or barely any — the heating element is the first part to test. It’s a coiled wire inside the dryer that can burn out over time, especially if the vent has been restricted. A multimeter check will confirm a break in continuity. Replacement is a straightforward repair for a technician and costs far less than a new dryer.
3. Faulty Gas Valve Coils (Gas Dryers)
Gas dryers use valve coils (solenoids) to open the gas valve during each heat cycle. When one or more coils fail, the burner may light briefly then cut out — leaving clothes damp. You might notice the dryer heats for the first 5 minutes then goes cold. This repair requires a licensed technician and the right replacement coils for your model.
4. Worn or Broken Moisture Sensor Bars
Modern dryers use two metal sensor bars inside the drum to detect moisture in the load. When clothes brush against them, they complete a circuit that tells the dryer to keep running. If the bars are coated in dryer sheet residue or fabric softener buildup, they read “dry” too early and shut off the cycle — leaving a wet load. Wipe the bars with rubbing alcohol once a month.
5. Overloaded Drum
Stuffing the dryer too full prevents clothes from tumbling freely. Hot air can’t circulate around the load, and drying time doubles. The rule of thumb: fill the drum about 3/4 full and leave room for clothes to move. Heavy items like jeans and towels should always go in smaller loads.

6. Worn Drum Seals
The felt seal around the dryer drum can wear down or tear after years of use. When it does, hot air leaks out of the drum casing instead of flowing through the load — heat goes nowhere useful. You may notice the outside of the dryer feels hot to the touch. A technician can replace the seal in about an hour.
When to Call a Technician
If you’ve cleaned the lint trap and vent, reduced your load size, and cleaned the moisture sensors — and the dryer still takes 60+ minutes for a normal load — it’s time for a professional diagnosis. Continuing to run a dryer with a restricted vent or failed heating component can be a fire hazard.
