We use the model number to identify who really built yours, then decode the serial using that manufacturer's own formula. Both fields are required for Kenmore.

The model/serial tag is usually a printed sticker or metal plate. Common locations by appliance type:
Inside the fridge compartment, along the side wall, or behind the crisper/produce drawer.
Inside the door frame, on the front-facing edge, or on the back of the top panel.
Inside the door frame, or on the inside of the lint filter housing.
On the edge of the door, visible when the door is open.
Inside the storage drawer at the bottom, or along the door frame.
Inside the door frame, along the edge visible when the door is open.
Most manufacturers build the manufacture date directly into the serial number, but the exact scheme is different for every brand — there's no single universal format. Our tool currently supports LG, GE/Hotpoint, the Whirlpool family (Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana), Bosch, Thermador, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Viking, Samsung, Fisher & Paykel, Perlick, and Kenmore, with more brands being added as we verify each brand's decoding logic for accuracy. Sub-Zero and Wolf are the one notable exception — their manufacturer confirms no date code exists in their serial numbers at all, so we show a straightforward "we can't decode this" message instead of guessing.
Kenmore note: Kenmore is a Sears house brand that doesn't manufacture appliances itself — every Kenmore is actually built by a real manufacturer (Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, Bosch, Samsung, and others), and the first 3 digits of the model number identify which one. That's why Kenmore is the one brand in this tool where we ask for both the model number and the serial number — we use the model prefix to figure out who really built your appliance, then apply that manufacturer's own decode formula to the serial. A handful of older model prefixes were reassigned between manufacturers over the decades and our sources genuinely disagree on them — for those, we'll tell you rather than guess.
Perlick note: its serial format changed in April 2016 — our tool decodes the current format accurately, but appliances made before then use an older, undocumented format and results for those units should be treated with extra caution.
Why we're careful about accuracy: a lot of "appliance age" tools online guess at a single confident-looking answer even when the underlying serial format is genuinely ambiguous (for example, LG and GE's schemes don't encode the full decade). We'd rather show you every realistic possibility — and how to narrow it down further — than give you false confidence in a made-up single answer.
This tool is based on publicly documented manufacturer serial number formats and is provided as a helpful estimate. It is not an official manufacturer lookup service, and results should be treated as a best estimate rather than a certainty.
