Thanks for the photo of the label. The WFW9470WWW01 is a Whirlpool Duet front-load washer, built in Germany in the mid-2000s. A door that locks and a washer that then refuses to start, even after unplugging, is a well-known failure on these machines. It usually comes down to one of three parts.

First, read the error code

Close the door, plug the washer back in, select a cycle and press Start. Wait 3–5 minutes and look at the display. A code such as F/dL (door won’t lock) or F/dU (door won’t unlock) points straight at the door lock. A drain or pressure code points elsewhere. Write down whatever you see.

Also check that the control lock isn’t on. A lit lock indicator means the panel ignores the buttons until you unlock it (see your owner’s manual for the button to hold).

The three usual causes

  • Door lock assembly. This is the most common cause. The washer locks the door, but a worn switch inside the lock doesn’t confirm it, so the control won’t start the cycle. Replacing the lock is the most common repair on these machines.
  • Water still in the drum. If the last cycle didn’t drain, the door stays locked for safety. A clogged drain pump or hose is the usual reason. Unplug the washer before draining it by hand, and have towels ready.
  • Motor control unit (MCU). Duet washers have a separate motor control board in the base. When it fails, the door locks, the washer hums or clicks, and nothing turns. It often fails after a power surge.

Is it worth repairing?

This washer is roughly 18–20 years old. A door lock is a reasonable repair. If a technician finds the motor control board or the motor, compare the quote with the price of a new washer before you approve it. Parts for this model are getting harder to find, and a second part often fails soon after the first.
