27-Year-Old Kenmore 253 Freezer Not Cold Enough: Repair or Replace?

Answered by GIR Technician, GIR Appliance Repair · October 22, 2026
❓ The question
Kenmore Freezer Model 253.9287212 Age: Over 12 years

“Is it known to live this long? Should i try to repair it?”

We had hot weather and my freezer seemed to defrost a few degrees. The food in the freezer stayed cold but soften. After a week the freezer was still cold but, not low enough to refreeze the food. Ice still solid but, food like hamburger patties soft.

I tried to refill the r134a but, it was not being sucked in. Im just an amateur trying to fix things.

What can i do to know if it can be repaired?

If so, please give me a brief description.

This freezer is 27 yrs old

Thank you

Hi Ben, I’ll be honest with you, the way a technician would standing in your garage. Twenty-seven years is a great run for a freezer, and you’ve already done a lot of the troubleshooting.

What your symptoms tell me

Ice still solid but hamburger patties soft means the freezer is sitting somewhere around 20–28°F instead of 0°F. It’s cold, but it’s not doing its full job. Your Kenmore 253 was built by Frigidaire. When an old freezer like this slowly loses cooling, especially after a hot spell, it usually means one of these:

  • Low on refrigerant from a small leak. That fits the slow decline you’ve seen.
  • A tired compressor that runs but doesn’t pump like it used to.
  • Something simpler that’s worth ruling out first (below).

Free checks before anything else

  1. Door seal: close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily anywhere, warm air is getting in.
  2. Breathing room: these freezers get rid of heat through the outside walls. Give it a few inches all around and keep it out of direct heat. A hot garage alone can push an old freezer past what it can handle.
  3. Is the compressor running non-stop? If it never shuts off and still can’t get cold, that points to the sealed system.
  4. Frost pattern: if only the top shelf or the first part of the coils frosts over and the rest stays bare, that’s a classic sign of low refrigerant.

About adding R-134a

Most home freezers don’t have a service port, which is likely why it wouldn’t take any. I’d stop there. Without gauges it’s easy to overcharge or let air and moisture in, and a piercing valve can become a new leak. A refrigerant leak also means the gas is going somewhere, so refilling only buys a little time.

Is it worth repairing?

Honestly, at 27 years old, no. A sealed-system repair (finding the leak, fixing it, a new drier, vacuum and recharge) usually runs $400–$900, and if the compressor is the issue it’s more than that. A new upright or chest freezer is about $300–$900 and will use far less electricity than one from the late ’90s.

For now, keep the food in the coldest spot or in a cooler with ice, and don’t refreeze anything that fully thawed. If the dollar-bill test or the location turns out to be the culprit, you might get some more life out of it. Let me know what you find.
