Hi Melissa, I’m sorry you’re having to babysit your washer. A loud noise while draining plus not moving on to spin on a Whirlpool top-loader like the WTW6120HC0 usually has one cause. The washer is struggling to get the water out. It won’t spin until the tub is empty, so it keeps draining, and the noise is usually the drain pump complaining.
Most likely: something stuck in the drain pump
Socks, baby clothes, coins, hair ties and bra wires can slip under the basket and end up in the pump. The pump impeller hits the object (that’s the loud rattle or grinding noise) and can’t push water out at full speed. That fits your symptoms exactly.
- Unplug the washer and turn off the water. Bail or drain out any water left in the tub (towels on the floor).
- The drain pump sits at the bottom of the washer. Tip the washer back against a wall (with someone helping), find the pump and take off the hose to the pump. Look inside the pump opening and the hose for anything stuck.
- Pull out whatever you find, put it back together and run a Drain & Spin.
Also check the drain hose
Make sure the hose behind the washer isn’t kinked or crushed when the washer is pushed back. It shouldn’t be pushed more than about 8 inches down into the standpipe.
If the pump is clear
If nothing is stuck and it still grinds, the pump itself is probably worn. On this model a new drain pump is an inexpensive part (usually under $80) and an easy swap. It’s well worth doing on a washer that’s 4–7 years old.
I also saw your questions about the dryer belt and the refrigerator lights, and I answered those too. If you get stuck, send us a follow-up question.
