Thanks for checking the outlet first. Since you’re getting 240 volts, power isn’t the problem. A dryer that hums but doesn’t turn when you press Start means the motor is getting power but can’t spin. On GE electric dryers like the DWSR463EGWW, there are two main reasons: something is stopping the drum, or the motor itself can’t start.

The 1-minute test: turn the drum by hand

Unplug the dryer first. Open the door, reach in and turn the drum by hand.

  • The drum is very hard to turn, scrapes or won’t move: the motor can’t overcome the drag, so it just hums. Go to the next section.
  • The drum turns easily with normal resistance: the problem is more likely the motor. Skip to “If the drum turns freely”.

Don’t hold the Start button down for long while it hums. A stalled motor heats up quickly and can trip its overload or burn out.

If the drum is hard to turn

  • Something caught at the drum edge. Socks, underwire or coins can wedge between the drum and the front or rear panel. Look around the drum seam and the lint filter opening.
  • Worn drum rollers or slides. The drum rides on rollers at the back and on slide pads at the front. When rollers seize or pads wear through, the drum drags. These usually start squealing or thumping before they stop the dryer.
  • Seized idler pulley. The idler keeps the belt tight. If its bearing seizes, the motor can’t turn the belt and hums instead.

Rollers, slides and the idler are inexpensive parts, often replaced together as a kit.

If the drum turns freely

The drive motor is the likely cause. These motors have a start winding and an internal switch that help them get going. When that start circuit fails, or the motor bearings are worn, the motor hums but can’t start on its own. A technician can confirm it by testing the motor windings and start switch with a meter.

While the back panel is off, also check that the belt is intact and on the idler correctly.

Is it worth repairing?

At 12+ years old, a roller kit or idler is well worth it. A new motor costs more, so compare the price with a new dryer before you decide. Either way, clean the lint out of the cabinet and the vent while it’s open, which helps it dry faster afterwards.
