Mold on the gasket and a bad smell are the most common problem with front-load washers, and you can usually fix it in an afternoon. By the way, the number you entered (803VWBB2K789) is the serial number. On LG it means the washer was made in March 2018.

Step 1: Clean the gasket

  • Pull back the folds of the rubber door gasket. Most of the mold and gunk hides at the bottom.
  • Mix about 1/4 cup of bleach into a quart of warm water. Wipe and scrub every fold with an old toothbrush, then wipe it dry. (Never mix bleach with vinegar or other cleaners.)
  • Check the drain holes at the bottom of the gasket and clear anything stuck there, like hair or lint.

Step 2: Clean the drain pump filter (often the real source of the smell)

LG washers have a small door at the bottom front, usually on the left. Behind it is a drain filter and a small drain hose. Put a shallow pan and towels down, drain the water out with the little hose, then unscrew the filter. It’s often full of slimy lint, coins and smelly water. Rinse it and screw it back in firmly.

Step 3: Run Tub Clean

Run the Tub Clean cycle with an empty drum and a washer cleaner tablet, or 3/4 cup of bleach in the bleach compartment. Clean the detergent drawer too (it pulls all the way out).

Keep it from coming back

  • Leave the door and the detergent drawer slightly open between washes so it dries out.
  • Use only HE detergent, and use less than the cap says. Too much soap leaves a film that mold feeds on.
  • Take wet clothes out soon after the cycle ends, and wipe the gasket dry after the last load of the day.
  • Run Tub Clean once a month.

If the black spots won’t come off

If the mold has grown into the rubber itself, the stains won’t come out completely. If they bother you, you can replace the gasket. It’s a reasonably priced part, but it takes a few hours. As long as the smell is gone, the stains are only cosmetic.
