Bosch Dishwasher (FD 9308) Leaves Food and Film on Dishes: Repair or Replace?

Answered by GIR Technician, GIR Appliance Repair · October 25, 2026
❓ The question
Bosch Dishwasher Model FD930802173 Age: Over 12 years

“Why doesnt my dishwasher remove minor food from (lightly pre-rinsed by hand) dishes?”

Dishwasher simply doesn't clean. Food still on utensils/dishes, glasses even still have finger prints on them. This has gotten increasingly worse. My water pressure is fine, water heats up and I have tried different detergents and rinse aids. Is this the expected life of a BOSCH dishwasher? Is it financially feasible to try to repair? Thank you!

Hi Diane, I understand the frustration. You’ve done the right things with the detergent and the rinse aid, and it’s still getting worse. Good news first: a Bosch from August 2013 (that’s what the FD 9308 code means, so it’s about 12 years old) usually has plenty of life left in its stainless tub. “Slowly gets worse” usually points to something blocking the water flow, not a dead dishwasher.

1. Clean the filters (most common cause)

Bosch dishwashers have a filter set at the bottom of the tub: a cylinder you twist out, plus a fine mesh flat filter under it. Over the years they get coated with grease and food film, and the dishwasher just spreads the dirty water around. Take them out, scrub them in hot soapy water with a soft brush and put them back. Many of our customers are surprised at how dirty they are.

2. Clean the spray arms

Pull out the lower and middle spray arms and check every hole. Use a toothpick to clear out bits of food, seeds or scale. A spray arm with blocked holes can’t reach parts of the dishwasher, which leaves food on the dishes.

3. Hard water and film

Fingerprints and film on glasses are usually mineral film from hard water, not dirt. Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. If you have hard water, a good tablet detergent made for hard water, plus rinse aid, helps a lot. Also, before you start a cycle, run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it’s hot.

If it’s still not cleaning after that

Then the problem is probably the circulation pump / heat pump. On Bosch it’s one part that both heats the water and pushes it through the spray arms. As it weakens, the spray gets weaker, but the water still heats, which matches your description.

Is it worth repairing?

Cleaning the filters and spray arms costs nothing and fixes most cases, so do that first. If it needs the pump, expect roughly $350–500 for parts and labor. On a 12-year-old Bosch that’s still reasonable if the rest of it is in good shape. If the quote is closer to the price of a new dishwasher, I’d replace it. Let me know how it goes after the cleaning.
